Sometimes things can be kept really simple..

# y+ 1/2 = 1-y/3#

#y +y/3 = 1-1/2" ( y + one third of y = 4/3 y)"#

#4/3 y = 1/2#

#3/4 xx 4/3 y = 1/2 xx3/4#

#y = 3/8#
