How do you solve #13-8v=5v+2# if it has variables on both sides?

You first bring variables to one side, and the numbers to the other.

We call that the balance method, because you are allowed to do the same at both sides of the #=# sign, just like you may do with the scales of a balance.

#13-8v=5v+2# now add #8v# on both sides
#13-8v+8v=5v+2+8v-># the #8v#'s left cancel out
#13=13v+2# now subtract #2# from both sides:
#13-2=13v+2-2->11=13v->#
#13v=11# divide both sides by #13# #->v=11//13#
