The general form for multiplying two binomials is:
(x+a)(x+b)=x2+(a+b)x+ab

Special products:

  1. the two numbers are equal, so it's a square:
    (x+a)(x+a)=(x+a)2=x2+2ax+a2, or
    (xa)(xa)=(xa)2=x22ax+a2
    Example : (x+1)2=x2+2x+1
    Or: 512=(50+1)2=502+250+1=2601

  2. the two numbers are equal, and opposite sign:
    (x+a)(xa)=x2a2
    Example : (x+1)(x1)=x21
    Or: 5149=(50+1)(501)=5021=2499
