2x2+10x=14

2x210x14=0

dividing the entire equation by 2,
x25x7=0

now adding and subtract "half of the x term squared",
which in this case is, (52)2

(x25x+(52)2)7(52)2=0

(x52)27(254)=0

(x52)2284254=0

(x52)2534=0

(x52)2=534

(x52)=±534

(x52)=±532

x=±532+52

x=5±532
