To locate a point on a coordinate grid ,where do you start?

It depends upon what you have been given.
One possibility is that you have a function, for example #y = 2x+3# and want to establish the point on the coordinate grid for when #x=5#
Substituting your value for #x# into the function gives a value for #y# (in the example #y=13#)
So you are looking for the point #(x,y) = (5,13)# (in this example)

This point is located #5# units to the right of the coordinate origin and #13# units up.
