Explanation:

If cot(x) = -2
then
color(white)("XXXX")in standard position we are looking at a
color(white)("XXXX")triangle whose adjacent to opposite side ratio is (-2:1)

Unfortunately, this is not one of the standard angle ratios.

The only way to solve this is to use a calculator (or similar technology), or look it up in a table of trig values, or use something like the Taylor expansion (if you have nothing better to do with your evenings).
