How do I find the domain of #ln (x-1)#?

The domain for all logarithms is restricted to positive numbers. This function, then, requires that x - 1 > 0 or x > 1.

I ask my students to state the domain in interval notation: #(1,\infty )#

This value (x = 1) also produces a vertical asymptote as you will see in the graph below:
