She was of Albanian extract. She is a highly controversial figure, revered by some in her work with the poor she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and was canonised in 2016.
However critics argued her Catholic attitudes to pain and suffering and to abortion caused unnecessary suffering amongst those she was supposed to be helping.
