There are four quadrants, hence four combinations of POS and NEG

Explanation:

Quadrant:
$I : x +, y +$ $I: x+, y+$
$I I : x -, y +$ $II: x-, y+$
$I I I : x -, y -$ $III:x-,y-$
$I V : x +, y -$ $IV:x+,y-$

So three of the quadrants may be called positive, either in $x$ $x$ or $y$ $y$ , or both.
