Accretion, the gradual clumping together of dust, rocks and meteorites into larger and larger bodies, eventually creates rocky planets, provided no larger gravitational bodies stop the process. It created Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, and we hypothesize that the asteroid belt could have been another planet if it weren't for the constant interruption by Jupiter's gravity.
