Chlorine is an halogen, and is in Group #VII# ("or 17") of the Periodic Table.

Explanation:

The name #"halogen"# means salt forming, and certainly there are many halide salts. Elemental chlorine exists as a diatomic gas, #Cl_2#; in fact all the elemental gases, save the Noble gases are diatomic.
