Osmosis is the movement of water through a semipermeable membrane from areas of higher water concentration to areas of lower water concentration.
This video discusses the changes which occur in plant cells when they are placed into hypertonic and hypotonic solutions.

A classic experiment which demonstrates osmosis is when eggs (shells removed) are placed into either water or syrup. The movement of water into or out of the egg causes some drastic changes to the eggs.
