Ketones are organic molecules that consist of a chain of carbons with a carbonyl group (oxygen double bonded to one of the carbons) somewhere in the middle of the chain.

Explanation:

A Ketone can often be confused with an aldehyde, the only difference is the location of the carbonyl group. Ketones have the carbonyl group in the middle, whereas aldehydes have it on a terminal carbon (the ends).

It is worth noting that the "R" group is a placeholder that represents a chain of carbons as small as one, but as numerous and complex as you can imagine - in either case it doesn't change the fact that functional groups makes the molecule a ketone
