During, the process of electrolysis the electric current is passed through an ionic compound which is either in it's molten state or dissolved in a solvent which leads to a chemical reaction.
A redox reaction is a specific type of chemical reaction in which the process of oxidation [ loss of electrons] and the process of reduction[ gain in electrons] takes place simultaneously.
In the process of electrolysis, oxidation of an ion takes places at anode [ the negatively charged electrode] and reduction takes place at cathode [ the positively charged electrode] simultaneously. As, in a redox reaction both oxidation and reduction takes place simultaneously therefore, we can actually conclude that electrolysis is a redox reaction.
