Think about it: you gain a carbon, and you either retain a carbonyl group or reduce and then oxidize it back.
The simplest way I can think of is:

- Start with a Grignard reagent (
#"CH"_3"MgBr"# ) and use it. - Add an acid, like hydronium, to finish step 1 by protonating the alkoxide; the water deactivates the Grignard reagent and turns it back into methane.
