There are six basic chemical reactions. All of the million possible reactions that take place are basically classified under one of each of the following.

SYNTHESIS
#A + B -> AB#
#N_2 + 3H_2 ->2NH_3#

DECOMPOSITION
#AB -> A + B#
#2KClO_3 -> 2KCl + 3O_2#

SINGLE DISPLACEMENT
#AB + C -> AC + B#
#2HCl + Mg -> MgCl_2 + H_2#

DOUBLE DISPLACEMENT
#AB + CD -> AD + CB#
#NaNO_3 + KCl -> NaCl + KNO_3#

NEUTRALIZATION
#HA + BOH -> BA + HOH#
Acid + Base #-># Salt + Water

COMBUSTION
#CH + O_2 -> CO_2 + H_2O#
HydroCarbon + Oxygen #->Carbon Dioxide + Water

I hope this was helpful.
