Given:
#5x+3y=2........................................(1)#
#-x+5y=4.......................................(2)#

Rewrite 1 and 2 as:

#y= -5/3x+2/3................................(1_a)#
#y=1/5x+4/5......................................(2_a)#

But #(1_a) = y = (2_a)#

So

#-5/3x+2/3 = 1/5x+4/5#

This can now be solved by collecting like terms and isolating #x#.
