How do you solve 4x+81=x2?

2 Answers

1) leave the square root alone on 1 side:
4x+8=x2+1=x1

2) square both sides:
4x+8=(x1)2

3) Expand the right side:(a+b)2=a2+2ab+b2
4x8=x22x+1

4) Move everything to one side and you get:
x26x+9=0

5) This. luckily factors out to:
(x3)2=0
so x=3

x=7,1

Explanation:

4x+81=x2

4x+8=x2+1

4x+8=x1

Square both sides:

(4x8)2=(x1)2

Use the formula (a+b)2=a2+2ab+b2 for the equation on the R.h.s

4x8=x22x+1

0=x22x+14x8

0=x26x7

Now this is a quadratic equation:Solve using quadratic formula:

x=7,1
