I would square both sides of your equation getting:
$4 a + 7 = a + 2$ $4a+7=a+2$
$4 a - a = 2 - 7$ $4a-a=2-7$
$a = - \frac{5}{3}$ $a=-5/3$

BUT....

unfortunately a square root cannot give a negative value so....we have to find another way!
