x = y - 11 . Substitute x by (y - 11) into equation 2.

x - 3y = 1 -> (y - 11) - 3y = 1 -> -2y = 12 -> $y = - 6$ $y = -6$ --> $x = - 6 - 11 = - 17$ $x = -6 - 11 = -17$ .

Check:
$x - 3 y = 1 \to - 17 - (- 3 (6)) = - 17 + 18 = 1$ $x - 3y = 1 -> -17 -(-3(6)) = -17 + 18 = 1$ OK.
