So, for this problem we use long multiplication to multiply 47 by 301 and then put the decimal 4 places in (4 decimal spots in the question) leaving us with 1.4147

Explanation:

To Multiply numbers with decimals sometimes it is easier to ignore the decimal place until the end of the problem.
the problem can be rewritten as,

#47*10^-2*301*10^-2# or,

#47*301*10^-4#

(#47*301# with decimal moved four to the left )

(I'm not really sure how to format long multiplication on this website so sorry about the dodgy set out Zeros in front are just placeholders representing a space. If someone can offer a solution in the comments that would be appreciated as well.)

After moving the decimal place four to the left (4 decimal spots in the question) we leave ourselves with,
1.4147

Alternatively, you could think of the problem as two fractions.

#47/100*301/100#

#=(47*301)/(100*100)#

#=14147/10000# (this is where the #*10^-4# comes from)

#=1.4147#
