You would solve the equation $-x^2-3x+17=0$

$x=(-b+-sqrt(b^2-4ac))/(2a)$

$x=(3+-sqrt(9-4(-1)*17))/-2$

$=(3+-sqrt(77))/-2$

$=-3/2+-sqrt77/2$
