How come on my "thank you notes" that some people sent it from e.g 'someone from San Francisco, America" and then some people have their names attached to it? I hope my question makes sense

That is because they did not register an account on Socratic and hence, did not provide any details about themselves. Socratic tracks your IP address to your general location. Therefore, they appear as "someone from San Francisco, America".
