The mass percent of a solution is calculated by dividing the mass of the solute by the mass of solution and multiplying times 100%.

"mass percent" = "Mass of solute"/"mass of solution" x "100%"

For example, 58.4 g NaCl are present in 525 g of solution. What is the mass percent?

"mass percent" = "Mass of solute"/"mass of solution" x "100%"

"mass percent" = "58.4 g NaCl"/"525 g of solution" x "100%" = "11.1%"
