Erosion would slowly diminish the sides of a mountain through flowing water.
If a river constantly went through a mountain, it would pull soil particles and dirt from the ground and carry it down to where the river ends.
Take the Grand Canyon for example, over the course of thousands of years, a river was able to carve that huge Canyon because it would carry dirt and sediment.
