People can affect erosion by how they use earth's surface.

Water run-off from residential and industrial areas can affect erosion if it is not properly controlled. “Off-track” motoring without regard to the environment often leaves a muddy, scarred landscape that erodes much more quickly than the natural cover would have allowed.
