Explanation:

The most common waves we encounter are sine waves in the case of analogue signals or square waves from inverters or digital signals.

The sine wave looks like the motion of a swimming snake, or a squirrel scampering at speed. The simple square wave looks like a row of equal sized blocks separated by equal spaces in a line.

The phase of either one of these waves is a measurable position on the waveform that can be used to calculate parameters of the wave.
