At certain depth 2d: P(2d) = P_o + rho g 2dP(2d)=Po+ρg2d

Bernoulli's Equation, even in this static situation, is an extremely convenient way of looking at it. The driver, though, is gravity. If you start drawing little well-aligned cubes underwater, and then consider the weight they are supporting, and that they are in equilibrium, you will see where it all comes from.
