There are two possible structures of butane which are basically the chain isomers.

"Butane" can be divided into two terms : "But", which is the word root, and "ane", which is the primary suffix.
"But" means "FOUR Carbon atoms" connected in several possible arrangements. Also, "ane" means saturation in the entire compound, i.e. presence of only single bonds.
- So, the most simple condensed structure of Butane is :
#H_3C-CH_2-CH_2-CH_3.#
This is also called n-butane. - Another pattern of arrangement of the carbon atoms is :
#H_3C-CH(CH_3)-CH_3.#
This is also called isobutane # -Methylpropane.
