In the periodic table, elements with the same number of valence electrons are in the same group, or column.
With the exception of transition metals, the nubmer of valence electrons are given by group number. Elements in group 1 have 1 valence electron, elements in group 2 have 2, and so on to elements in group 18, which have 8 valence electrons (except helium which has 2).
