Why can’t there be magnetic monopoles. I understand on a trivial level (lack of maths) it is forbidden by Maxwell’s laws, but can someone explain it?

I understand the argument for it, but the subscript ‘total’, ‘net’ etc. are very common in Physics and all of them are locked to produce algebraic symbols. Rather irritating. Is there a solution?

Can people be encouraged (reminded?) to write a biography once they become regular users? It’s just nice to know something about the questioner and can help you to pitch the answer so it’s at a more appropriate level.

Solar eclipses occur due to the moon and sun being the same apparent size, but the moon is gradually receding. When did eclipses as we see them first appear, when will they end and when is/was the “perfect” age for a solar eclipse?

Given how often diagrams / photos etc are used in the best answers, is it possible that the upload could be made one step, so image and pasted link address are uploaded in the same dialogue box?
