People saw government intervention as necessary in the context of depression

The 1929 crisis was interpreted as a failure laissez faire economics and president Herbert Hoover was called "do nothing" by the Democrats to slander him. It was actually unfair since he did try to intervene in the economy with protectionism.
The New Deal was then justified thanks to that discredit since the Federal Government was henceforth seen as legitimate to step in so as to fix the economy.
