Somatic mutations occur in body cells as a result of errors in DNA replication or abnormal chromosome distribution during mitosis, and cannot be passed on to offspring. Mutations that are relevant to evolution must be able to be passed on to offspring, and occur during the process of meiosis in which the gametes are formed.
