Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States.

He played a large part in the civil war. He helped preserve the Union and passed the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery.
He did four important things for the Civil War.
- He distributed $2 million for war material
- He called 75,000 volunteers into military service
- He suspended the writ of habeas corpus (arresting suspected Confederate sympathizers without a warrant)
- He issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863
It was Lincoln who later caused the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
