It was discovered and the theory of it formulated by Isaac Newton (possibly drawing on Robert Hooke) around the year 1686 or so.
Explanation:
Gravity was discovered, not invented, but the theory of universal gravitation is usually attributed to Isaac Newton, but he may have got at least some of it from Robert Hooke.
