Watson & Crick get all the attention, but they used a lot of Rosalind Franklin's research to arrive at this conclusion.
Base pairing is exactly what it sounds like, nitrogenous bases will preferentially hydrogen-bond to a complimentary nitrogenous base; usually purines and pyrimidines bind together.
For instance, adenine and thymine will usually bond in DNA.
