If RL is the load resistance which is connected across the part R2 of a voltage divider consisting of R1 and R2, then the total resistance. once the load is connected is

R1+R2RLR2+RL

since the second term is smaller than R2, this expression is smaller than R1+R2 which is the total resistance without the load.
