Since 987 the French kind had to face the feodal lords in order to strengthen their power. Louis XIV achieved the final step by implementing the so-called "absolute monarchy" which consisted in an absolute power in the hands of the monarch.
The nobles who lived in Louis XIV's court were domesticated, their powers were weakened by the king. The king also had intendants in every province of the kingdom to make sure his authority was not challenged.
