These types of storms are very large and can cause significantly more damage than smaller storms. Tropical storms are what hurricanes and typhoons evolve from. Hurricanes and typhoons are essentially the same thing, they have different names based on what part of the world they occur. General rule of thumb, a hurricane forms over the Atlantic Ocean and a typhoon forms over the Pacific Ocean.
