Explanation:

Chemical equations conserve mass and charge. Given that the proferred equation does not balance mass (why not?), it cannot be accepted as a model that represents chemical reality.

H_2(g) + Cl_2(g) rarr 2HCl(g)

Is this reaction acceptable?

What about this one?

1/2H_2(g) + 1/2Cl_2(g) rarr HCl(g)
