Molecules tend to move all the time in all directions, and this applies to water molecules which are moved during osmosis, and all types of molecules which are moved during diffusion. In both cases there is a driving force which forces the molecules to move in a specific direction. This does not mean that all molecules will move this way as still some are moving in the opposite direction. The number of the molecules moving in the direction of the force minus the number of the molecules moving in other directions is the net movement of the molecules.
