What is the name for a one-carbon alkyl substituent?

Methyl.
The prefixes are:
- Meth: 1
- Eth: 2
- Prop: 3
- But: 4
- Pent: 5
- Hex: 6
- etc.
and of course you end in "yl" because it's an alkyl substituent (i.e. of an alkane).
