Fluorine in a compound cannot be separated from the compound through reactions with other chemicals. Fluorine reacts explosively with hydrogen or water, and in its pure form is capable of igniting concrete when the gas is directed towards it.
Fluorine is a pale yellow gas that reacts with everything except some of the noble gases. This made it difficult to separate from other elements and so made its discovery even more difficult. The path to the discovery of fluorine led to disabilities and death for some scientists.
