where dm is the mass of the differential element of the body and r is the distance of that differential element from the point about which you want to find out the moment of inertia .
thus , moment of inertia of a pendulum is = mr^2
m - mass of the bob
r - distance of bob from the pivot
with the assumption that the string connecting bob and the pivot is massless and inextensible .
therefore , moment of inertia = 2 * 12^2
= 288 kgm^2
