Bond energy is exactly what it says; it is the energy necessary to break the bond, i.e. it is the energy the bond can absorb before the bond breaks. What is bond-breaking? Exothermic or endothermic?
Bond energy, as demonstrable by breaking any twig, can be verified to be inversely proportional to bond length. Try it. Is it harder to break a longer bond, or easier? Does it thus take more energy, or less than for a shorter bond?
