Periosteum is made of tough fibrous tissue which covers the compact bone. It has many functions.

Explanation:

Periosteum has cells which are capable of giving rise to bone forming cells i.e. osteoblasts. Thus it also helps in increasing the diameter of bone.

Periosteum mediates attachment of tendons and ligaments on bone.

Periosteum is highly vascularised, hence supplies nutrition to bony tissue.

Periosteum also has nerve endings.
