What is the difference between proper and improper fractions?

If the top number (numerator) is larger than the bottom number (denominator) it is an improper fraction.

If the top number is less than the bottom number, it is proper fraction.

A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction.

Proper: #3/8#

Improper: #8/3#

Mixed: #2 2/3#
