They differ in having the number of chromosomal sets.
Somatic cells are generally diploid having two sets of chromosome , represented by n
While Gametes which are produced after meiosis ( Reductional division ) have half the number of chromosome than the somatic cells that is haploid set of chromosomes ( n )

Gametes have the haploid number of chromosomes as the one gamete is able to fuse with another one to form a diploid cell which is the zygote. Somatic cells re diploid cell having two full sets of chromosomes.
