Exponential decay is used to model such things as radioactive decay, and is the opposite of exponential growth (eg Bacteria growth).

Mathematically we can model it using a formula such as:

# N(t) = N_0 \ e^(-lamda t) # where #lamda gt 0 #

Resulting from a DE of the form:

# (dN)/(d lamda) = - lamda N #
