The greatest risk in overcharging a battery comes as a result of the added energy, no longer being used to run the endothermic recharge reaction, then creates excessive heat.
This can cause a variety of problems, but mainly it will result in expansion of the electrolyte solution and can crack open the battery case, resulting in complete failure of the battery and possible damage to the device which held the battery.
